Chapter 15

It was Monday morning and there were four of us seated at the kitchen table for breakfast: Me, Jack, Florence and a coconut.

Florence had drawn a face on it and given it a name.

“Coco says he likes muesli, Mummy. He wants to know why you don’t eat it.”

“Tell Coco that I prefer Chococandy Pops.”

“Coco says that they’re bad for you and they rot your teeth.”

“Tell Coco—hang on, why am I explaining myself to a coconut?”

“I have no idea.” Jack laughed. “But keep it up. It’s great entertainment.”

“Florence, when are you going to eat Coco—I mean that coconut?” I said.

“I’m not going to eat him.” Florence looked appalled at the idea. “And you shouldn’t say that in front of Coco. It will upset him.”

I turned to Jack. “You know how I keep telling you that my life can’t get any crazier? Guess what? It just did.”

“Talking about crazy. Are you really not going to do anything about Adey?”

“What exactly would you have me do?”

“Why don’t you send him back to the underworld?”

“I don’t have the heart. He’s such a lovely man.”

“Who just happens to be king of the underworld and have a dog with three heads.”

“Which dog has three heads?” Florence said.

“Daddy is just joking, aren’t you, Daddy?” I shot Jack a look.

“Yes, pumpkin. I was just kidding around.”

“Why don’t you take Coco outside in the garden?” I suggested. “He looks like he needs some fresh air.”

“Okay.” She grabbed the coconut and disappeared outside.

“What were you thinking, Jack? Why did you mention a dog with three heads? You’ll give her nightmares.”

“Sorry, but you’re the one who seems content to allow that monstrous dog to live in the village. What if it gets out? Who knows what it might do?”

“Thanks, Jack. I really needed something else to worry about.”
